Presentation at the National Defence University in Pakistan

Presentation delivered by Emeritus Professor Tom Woodhouse from the University of Bradford during the 6th International Peace Symposium at the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies, National Defence University, Islamabad, Pakistan.

Under the theme “Crisis Management, Strategic Communication and Diplomacy,” Professor Woodhouse’s presentation contributed to global perspectives in the field by critically examining the limitations of militarized security approaches and highlighting the expanding global “insecurity trap.” He emphasized the urgent need to transition toward a cosmopolitan peace system grounded in human security, inclusive global governance, and the principles of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The presentation also highlighted innovative pathways for sustainable conflict transformation, particularly sport diplomacy and positive peace initiatives. These ideas were illustrated through the initial outcomes of the Football Peace Academy pilot project, implemented in partnership with the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) and Fundación Goles por la Paz in Bucaramanga, Colombia, demonstrating how sport can foster positive peace, strengthen social cohesion, and cultivate local peace champions in violence-affected settings.
