Leeds United's Rodrigo Teaches Spanish to Children in Lane End Primary School

International players can act as “global ambassadors” within local neighbourhoods. Leeds United’s Rodrigo Moreno Machado engagement with Lane End Primary School illustrates that.

Every football club in the English Leagues have very active community foundations providing projects and programmes across a wide variety of topics. All of them have education programmes which support schools and school children of all ages to study and to learn.

Born in Brazil, Rodrigo moved to Spain in his early teens and played for clubs in Portugal and Spain before joining Leeds in August 2020. He taught Spanish to the children of Lane End Primary School and told them about his life and the importance of education.

The connection between sport and education is one of the most effective ways to foster community resilience and individual growth. When professional athletes act as role models, they use the universal language of sport to bridge the gap between a young person’s passion for the game and their commitment to learning, proving that academic discipline and athletic excellence are mutually reinforcing.

On an individual level, this connection is a direct vehicle for the IEP pillar of High Levels of Human Capital and SDG 4: Quality Education, as it inspires students to pursue skills and knowledge through a high-engagement role model. On an institutional level, football clubs become Partners for the Goals (SDG 17).
