Footballers contribute to their communities in many ways and beyond showcasing initiatives, the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) plays an important and continued role in encouraging players to act as socially responsible role models.
The 2019/20 Community Player Engagement Review specifically celebrated the “shared solidarity” of players and Club Community Foundations who pivoted to support public health efforts and vulnerable populations during the pandemic. This period highlighted that the impact of a professional player in not confined to ninety minutes of sport.
The scale of the engagement is substantial. Over 33,000 player visits were recorded by the PFA for the 2019-2020 season, covering support for projects in education, health, social inclusion, anti-racism, disability. Moreover, over 450 Community Ambassadors worked to directly support projects related to community engagement, serving as the face of their clubs’ social missions.
Addressing specific systemic gaps is also a priority. In February 2021, the PFA launched the Asian Inclusion Mentoring Scheme (AIMS), a strategic initiative designed to increase the representation of Asian players in professional football. Despite Asian and Asian British people making up approximately 7.5% of the UK population, their representation in professional leagues remains disproportionately low. AIMS is part of a broader five-year plan to also improve Asian representation in the Women's Super League, increase the number of Asian coaches, and educate club staff on cultural considerations.
The scheme aims to achieve this by: Building a mentoring network, connecting senior professional players of Asian heritage with academy players, scholars, and their families; and peer-to-peer support, through workshops and meetings where younger players gain insights into the “lived experience” of professional football.
Ultimately, these initiatives demonstrate how the PFA uses the platform of professional football to address systemic inequalities and promote broad social responsibility, so the game continues to evolve into a powerful vehicle for social change.
